Abstract
The banking industry is highly dependent on employee productivity,
customer service quality, and operational efficiency. Employee motivation
serves as a critical determinant of performance outcomes. This study
investigates the comparative impact of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on
employee performance in public and private sector banks. A quantitative
research design was adopted using a structured questionnaire. The study
proposes that intrinsic motivation positively influences employee performance
through job satisfaction, autonomy, and personal growth, while extrinsic
motivation contributes through compensation, promotion opportunities, and
organizational rewards. Comparative analysis reveals sectoral differences in
motivational preferences and performance outcomes. Findings suggest that
private-sector employees are more strongly influenced by intrinsic motivational
factors, whereas public-sector employees demonstrate greater responsiveness to
extrinsic rewards. The study contributes to organizational behavior literature
and provides strategic implications for human resource managers in the banking
sector.
